The Swiss owner of Hotelplan Group has confirmed it wants to quit the travel sector.
Migros Group, which owns a chain of supermarkets, has put Hotelplan UK up for sale. The UK arm includes Inghams, Ski Total, Ski Esprit and Santa’s Lapland as well as Inntravel and Explore.
Migros also owns the Interhome Group and German and Swiss tour operators, which are also on the market.
Migros said: “The travel business has shifted towards very large international or specialised travel companies, where size matters.
“The Hotelplan Group is the largest travel company in Switzerland, but is comparatively small in global terms, and synergies with the Migros Group’s core business are limited.”
Migros added Hotelplan Group achieved record results in 2022 and 2023. “However, Migros sees even greater development opportunities for the company with a new owner.”
Migros will publish its annual results on 26 March, when it is expected a further update will be given.
Last summer, Inghams rebranded its summer programme as Inghams Walking, saying this was part of a portfolio shift to allow for global warming’s effect on winter sports, which it predicted would be more limited in future.
