New bookings for InsideJapan Tours trips exceeded 2019 levels in August after the Japanese government peeled back more of the country’s long-standing Covid border restrictions.
Several of the remaining restrictions, including a daily entry cap and pre-travel tourist visa application, will be removed next month, which Inside Japan co-founder Simon King described as "the final barrier" to a full resumption of international tourism to Japan.
The easing of restrictions will see Japan aim to fully reopen in time for the "Koyo" autumn leaf season.
InsideJapan was one of the first western operators to bring tourists back to Japan in the summer after the country green-lit small group touring, and has this month restarted its self-guided cultural touring programme.
“After two-and-a-half years, Japan is now fully open to tourists without the hassle of visas," said King. "For our customers and agents, this removes the final barrier to travel and any uncertainty around travel, allowing them to plan and look forward to their trips."
Arrivals from "blue" countries, which include the UK, US and Australia, can now enter Japan without a pre-arranged tourist visa. King said the removal of the visa process had freed up the equivalent of "at least two full-time roles".
Those fully vaccinated against Covid-19 with at least three jabs do not need to test prior to their travel or on arrival; non-fully vaccinated travellers must provide evidence of a negative pre-departure test for Covid-19.
"Despite being one of the last few countries in the world to keep restrictions in place and the impression that may give, Japan really is very keen to welcome visitors again," said King. "Recent customer feedback has shown the welcome they received from ryokan owners, restauranteurs and locals has been incredible. Japan really does not disappoint."
King also revealed further announcements in late-August on Japan’s plans to reopen its borders drove up tour bookings to such an extent they exceeded August 2019 levels, while web traffic in August was up 250% on the same month in 2019.
"Demand for our cultural adventures has been huge, and we do not expect that to change for both our self-guided trips or small group tours as people look to make the most out of their time in Japan and are reassured by our on-the-ground the support should they need it," King added.
