Step1

“Regardless of Willie’s opinion – and Willie is entitled to whatever opinion he chooses to express – Virgin Atlantic needs to remain truly Virgin Atlantic for us to win, that’s actually what Delta needs us to be too,” he says.

“What Delta needs is for us to compete effectively with BA as this company has done for its entire history, and the way we do that is by offering a different product, feel, experience, personality that makes people want to come back and fly us again.

“Who’s going to win Willie’s bet with Richard? It’s going to be Richard because we have to be Virgin Atlantic and Delta needs it too, so we will always [be Virgin] .”

As well as spending time planning where to fly, Kreeger has also been busy working out what to fly.

Last month, Virgin Atlantic finally got its hands on its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which Kreeger describes as the “future of the company”.

The new aircraft will make up 60% of the carrier’s fleet by the end of 2018 as the company looks to reduce its environmental impact and also improve its customer proposition.

Airport answers

Like most of the airline industry, Kreeger isn’t shy about offering an opinion on the topic of airport capacity and where a new runway should be built. His tone isn’t angry, more disappointed that the situation has yet to be resolved.

“My view is simple. The UK has really lost an opportunity to take advantage of the way that airport infrastructure drives commerce in the entire society.”

He adds: “The way that you remedy that situation is by creating a real hub and Gatwick is a perfectly good solution but it’s a different problem. Heathrow is more of the hub airport – its already bigger, adding capacity there would make it more competitive.”

The questions over airport expansion will be answered next summer when the Davies Commission gives its final verdict – a solution though is likely to be decades away. Kreeger is a lot more optimistic about matters closer to home.

“We sit here today having made the key route decisions that we needed to make. We made the decision on Little Red and a big decision on investing more for customers… and taking delivery of our first 21 787s that are the future of the company – and now we are moving from that recovery phase into a phase where we really can see a bright future ahead of us.

“This is the moment of that transition and it’s really exciting.”
