The first of two new Jet2 routes to Italy’s islands has taken off from Birmingham airport.
Jet2’s inaugural BHX-Sicily flight departed on Thursday (25 May), and will be complemented by a new Sardinia service, which will take off on Sunday (28 May).
The airline and operate will operate both routes on a weekly basis until late-October.
It means Jet2 will offer seven Italian destinations from Birmingham this summer – the other five being Naples, Pisa, Rome, Venice and Verona. It’s total sun and city schedule at BHX this summer will run to 51 destinations.
Across its Jet2holidays and Jet2CityBreaks brands, the operator is offering a wide range of hotels across both destinations, mainly four- and five-star properties, as well as villas suitable for families and groups via Jet2Villas.
In Sardinia, resorts on sale include Porto Cervo, Baia Sardinia, Budoni, San Teodoro, Cannigione, San Pantaleo, Orosei and Pittulongu, with Jet2 also offering Olbia city breaks.
Jet2’s new Sicily route, meanwhile, opens up the resorts of Taormina, Taormina Mare, Giardini Naxos, Syracuse, Cefalu and Campofelice Di Roccella, as well as city breaks to Catania.
Steve Heapy, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays chief executive, said the new island routes had proved "extremely popular" with travellers and agents keen to offer their clients a different sunshine experience or show them another side of Italy.
BHX aviation director Tom Screen added access to Sicily’s coastline, landscapes and cuisine, along with Sardinia’s geology, beaches and unique history, came as "fabulous news" for travellers.
