Peru’s iconic Machu Picchu is to increase the number of tourist permits from January.
The daily limit will rise from 3,800 to 4,500 next month, according to local reports.
In January 2023, the site was closed to tourism following political protests in Peru that jeopardised transport links. It reopened a month later with the current limit imposed.
Reports say the new limit on visitors to the Inca city will be increased to 5,600 on some dates.
According to Incatrailmachu.com, the traditional morning and afternoon admission ticket options have been replaced with an hourly entry time ranging from 06:00 to 14:00.
Peru is trying to regain tourist numbers following the crisis that saw a wave of political violence in March. The country attracted 4.3 million international visitors pre-Covid but is thought to be running at half this figure now.
A boost to its hopes of reviving visitor numbers was the launch of Latam’s Heathrow-Lima flight on 2 December, which operates five times a week. It takes over as the sole UK link following the withdrawal of British Airways’ Gatwick service in 2021.
