A petition to "save" Doncaster Sheffield airport has been raised in parliament after it reached 56,000 signatures.
The petition was submitted by Conservative MP for Don Valley Nick Fletcher, who, on behalf of the petitioners, requested the House of Commons urged the government to "take all necessary to steps" to ensure the future of the airport.
"I submit this petition on behalf of the good people of Don Valley, and the 56,000 people who have supported an online petition to save Doncaster Sheffield airport from closure," he said.
"It is an award winner that is central to Doncaster’s future. It has superb facilities, its location could not be better, and it is one of the most environmentally friendly airports at which to land an aircraft; it has a unique approach.
"The petitioners request the House of Commons urge the government to take all necessary steps to keep our airport open, and to safeguard its future for Doncaster and its people."
Last week, the owners of Doncaster Sheffield, Peel Group, said it may "no longer be commercially viable" after Wizz Air closed its base at the airport.
Elsewhere, policing shadow minister Louise Haigh asked transport secretary Grant Shapps "to do everything in his power" to ensure the future of the airport.
"Having neglected the needs of aviation and its workers during the pandemic, the government must engage with Peel Holdings to see if there is a viable future for the airport," she wrote.
South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard has written to Peel Group to express his "disappointment" about its "lack of ambition" for the airport.
"While the announcement made by Peel is to ‘review’ the viability of the airport, my worry is that they will seek to shut down the site and then simply sit on the site, demanding planning permission to turn the airport into housing or retail," he tweeted.
"I want to see DSA thrive, and there is no reason an airport with great facilities and a catchment of millions shouldn’t be successful."
