A petition to "save" Doncaster Sheffield airport has been signed by more than 30,000 people.
Earlier this week, owner Peel Group said the airport may no longer be commercially viable following Wizz Air’s decision to close its base there.
It leaves the airport with just one base carrier, Tui.
“Despite growth in passenger numbers, DSA has never achieved the critical mass required to become profitable, and this fundamental issue of a shortfall in passenger numbers is exacerbated by the announcement on 10 June of the unilateral withdrawal of the Wizz Air-based aircraft, leaving the airport with only one base carrier," said Peel Group.
"This challenge has been increased by other changes in the aviation market, the well-publicised impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and increasingly important environmental considerations. It has therefore been concluded aviation activity may no longer be the use for the site that delivers the maximum economic and environmental benefit to the region."
By 10am on Friday (15 July), more than 32,000 people had signed Yorkshire Plane Spotting’s petition calling for DSA to be kept open.
"Doncaster Sheffield airport serves Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and many more towns around the UK," it read. Hundreds of jobs will be lost at the airport. I feel like Doncaster, which has just become a city in the past couple of months, will be going backwards if the airport shuts down.
"The airport has potential to become one of the best in the UK with a great terminal building and connections to towns and cities with the newly built link road. Doncaster currently serves routes around Europe and the US and Mexico – it would be a tragedy if this gets taken away from us."
