Stansted has recorded its busiest month in April since September, according to new traffic data.
Figures published on Friday (12 May) by the airport’s owner, MAG, show that 2.4 million passengers passed through the terminals last month, 16% up on last year’s levels.
This has brought the total of passengers for the year ended April to 25.8 million, up 111% on the previous year.
According to the data, the Easter bank holiday weekend gave the London hub a significant boost, with Stansted reporting 87,000 passengers on Easter Monday – its busiest day of the year so far.
Despite millions of people travelling through, the airport has maintained a positive security performance, with 98% of passengers passing through security in 15 minutes or less.
“April was our busiest month since September last year, and we expect demand to continue to rise as we head towards what could be the airport’s busiest summer ever, so our hard work is ongoing to ensure we are fully prepared,” said managing director Gareth Powell.
Elsewhere, Manchester airport has also performed well, reporting a 15% increase in numbers, as 2.2 million passengers have travelled to or from it in the past month.
Dubai, figures showed, was the most popular destination as 88,000 people flew there – up by 31,000 compared to 2022.
Manchester managing director Chris Woodroofe hailed the results, saying it was “really pleasing to kick off April by delivering a hugely successful Easter.”
“It is great to see passenger volumes continue to grow, and to have been able to provide all those travelling through Manchester airport with a great level of service,” he added.
“That means we are going into the peak summer season ready for passengers to see the airport at its best.”
Overall, passenger numbers at MAG airports have surged by 16.4% to 4.8 million over the past month while the rolling 12-month passenger total has gone up by 123% to 54.8 million.
