Several major destinations in the Mediterranean have been hit by high winds, torrential rain and flash flooding – prompting fresh weather warnings from the Foreign Office.
After the 40C heatwave that brought wildfires to Greece and Italy earlier this summer, both countries are now battling more extreme weather in the form of severe storms, driven by Storm Daniel’s passage across the Mediterranean.
Jet2.com and Tui have cancelled flights to Skiathos after 24 hours of near constant rain, with the same amount of rain falling in a single day than is typical for the whole of autumn.
Images and video posted to social media show rivers running through major streets, flooding local businesses and accommodation, and forcing holidaymakers to take refuge in the island’s airport.
"Adverse weather conditions, including floods, are affecting some regions," said the FCDO in an update to its travel advice for Greece, adding: "The situation can change quickly."
In Malta, the FCDO said adverse weather conditions – including flooding and strong winds – were affecting the island, as well as Gozo, including the ferry service to Gozo. The main impact of the storm is expected to be felt on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in another update, the FCDO said holidaymakers in southern areas of Italy – notably Calabria and Sicily – should expect further "sever weather conditions" in the coming days.
