Guided holiday expert Trafalgar has launched a dedicated Africa programme for the first time in its 72-year history.
Its inaugural Africa brochure features five new destinations: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya.
Departures start in December and continue throughout 2019.
The programme pays homage to the homeland of Trafalgar chief executive Gavin Tollman and his family, who hail from South Africa.
The family-owned business said while it had always had “firm roots” in Africa, a move into the country was overdue.
“This continent is our home, the place we know best,” said Tollman. “It is critical for us to do justice to that legacy, sharing with you the secrets and hidden gems that are part of our family.”
Trafalgar’s Africa programme will be broken down into three types of trip: country explorer, regional explorer and mini-stay.
Itineraries will offer exclusive access to people and places typically off the beaten track, aiming to provide an “immersive and intimate” experience.
Most Africa tours will feature 12-15 guests, although some mini-stay adventures will be available to groups as small as four.
Guests on Trafalgar’s 14-day Namibia Explorer will meet members of one of the few remaining semi-nomadic tribes of Namibia and visit the Fish River Canyon, with Trafalgar one of only a handful of tour operators able to feature it as part of a guided itinerary.
Its 14-day African Safari Adventure features entry to top safari parks in Tanzania and Kenya while guests will visit a children’s home in Kenya that takes in abandoned and vulnerable young people. Funds from the visit will go back into supporting these local children.
Meanwhile, the five-day Botswana Delta Experience is a “once-in-a- lifetime” mini-adventure extension, including a fly-in, fly-out safari on a light aircraft or a four-day Victoria Falls Experience, including secluded accommodation on the banks of the Zambezi river.
Besides the five new destinations, Trafalgar has added two South Africa itineraries – a 15-day Best of South Africa and 10-day Essence of South Africa – to complement its existing Morocco and Egypt itineraries and complete its first Africa programme. The 10-day Best of Morocco itinerary leads in at £1,650pp, twin share.
Christmas 2018 departures include Trafalgar’s 14-day African Safari Adventure and 10-day Essence of South Africa itinerary.
