The Foreign Office has issued a travel warning for Japan after typhoon Lan hit the country, causing train and flight delays between Tokyo and the western regions.
“If you are in an affected area, you should monitor advisories issued by national and local authorities and take appropriate action as instructed,” the Foreign Office said.
The warning comes as the typhoon made landfall in the southwest of Tokyo on Tuesday (15 August), bringing with it heavy rains and strong winds of 93mph.
The typhoon – the second to hit Japan over the past three weeks – has led to the cancellation of almost 900 flights to and from the country and disruption to dozens of trains.
Over the past day, Tokyo’s Haneda airport was forced to cancel and delay around 200 domestic flights and eight international services while Narita Airport axed 11 arrivals and 10 departures.
According to local reports, Shinkansen services between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka have also been cancelled while trains between Tokyo and Nagoya have been reduced.
