The concept of a ‘coolcation’ – a holiday centred around cooler climates – is capturing the interest of UK travellers.
The finding was revealed by cruise specialist cruise.co.uk, following a recent survey of over 750 of its customers.
The survey found that 5% of all cruisers are more open to a ‘coolcation’ than they were 12 months ago, with nearly half (49%) of respondents finding the option appealing. The most sought-after cool destination was named as the Norwegian Fjords (34%), followed by Alaska (23%), Iceland and Greenland (20%), Antarctica (13%) and the Baltic Sea (10%).
‘Scenic natural beauty’ was overwhelmingly the main motivation for choosing a cooler cruise, with 65% of respondents citing it as their top reason. ‘Unique wildlife experiences’ (19%) and ‘cultural experiences in less crowded destinations’ (13%) were next, with ‘escaping the heat’ cited by just 3% of respondents.
Tony Andrews, managing director at cruise.co.uk, said: “This survey clearly indicates a shift in preferences among UK holidaymakers. While traditional sun-soaked destinations remain popular, more travellers are seeking out colder climates and the incredible experiences they offer. With stunning landscapes, rich wildlife and fewer crowds, ‘coolcation’ cruises are emerging as a compelling alternative for those seeking something different."
