South Australian Tourism Commission & Tourism Northern Territory mark 30th anniversary of ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ movie
The joint campaign is aimed at encouraging travel agents to use the movie to book clients on to self-drive adventures through the heart of Australia.
The Explorers Way, an incredible touring route connecting the city of Adelaide with the city of Darwin, takes in some of the country’s landscapes including key locations from the film, which was recently re-released.
Those following in the footsteps of the film can tour the underground town of Coober Pedy with local operator Noble Tours who will also get guests into the stunning Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park where the movie poster for the film was shot.
In the Northern Territory locations include the town of Alice Springs and Kings Canyon where travellers can follow in the queens footsteps along the iconic Rim Walk. They can also take their picture at Priscilla’s Crack, made famous in 1994 when it featured in the movie.

This film and talk of a sequel shines a light on the Australian outback and the opportunities to book a road trip from Adelaide to Darwin taking in some of the locations featured in the film.”
To showcase this driving route, the South Australian Tourism Commission, Tourism Northern Territory and Tourism Australia worked with Drag Race UK stars Ginny Lemon and Sister Sister. Organising for them to travel part of The Explorers Way, from Adelaide to Uluru, Ginny and Sister created content on their channels aimed at their LGBTQI friendly audiences. Five key experiences showcased were:
