Although he first intended to be an accountant, Strand Travel’s managing director Tom O’Donohoe followed six other family members into travel retailing, so admits he had it “in the blood”.
Strand Travel has been on the Waterford high street since 1976, and has a smart shop-front with a video screen introducing the team and highlighting interesting destinations. The agency been able to weather some tough economic times thanks to a loyal customer base, and also to regularly advertising in and writing articles for local newspapers and magazines, to remain top-of-mind for customers in the local area and beyond.
The agency has recently launched a new website, packed with destination inspiration and reviews and now offering the ability to book simple holidays online.
Social media is also beginning to take off for the agency, with more than 3,000 Likes on its Facebook page, and well-curated special offers on Facebook translating into sales.
But good old-fashioned knowledge and the personal touch is still at the heart of Strand Travel’s success, and the number of five-star reviews on the agency’s Facebook page indicate the excellence of its customer service.
The team goes above and beyond for its clients including, for example, creating a special information pack for cruise customers with laminated luggage tags and personalised documents, and pre-booking on-board dining and excursions on their customers’ behalf.
By sending senior members of the team on a management and business development course, Tom has been able to involve the team in the way the agency should develop, meaning the team feel incredibly engaged and motivated. Six of the 14 consultants at Strand Travel have been with the business more than 20 years, and it’s clear to see this is a team that loves what they do and where they work.
