New community-inspired resort for the Seychelles

New Laila, Seychelles situated in Anse Royale in the south east of Mahe, incorporates community events and features a design reflecting the shapes of the archipelago.

Comprising 76 rooms and eight suites with plunge pools or connecting rooms, the resort is set against a backdrop of jungle and ocean views.

Part of the Tribute Portfolio, it was constructed by its local Seychelles-born owner who wanted to create a sense of community.

Global hospitality brand creation agency 01-20 is behind the design. Its team created interiors inspired by the surrounding flora.

The outlines of the Seychelles archipelago are also repeated as a motif throughout the resort not least in a ceiling frieze in which the 115 islands’ silhouettes have been carved from local mahogany.

Throughout the hotel, shapes have been inspired by the contours of reefs. Pillow patterns, rugs and wall art meanwhile reflect the surrounding flora and have been created in collaboration with local artisans.

Each room is unique and includes further touches specific to the Mahe culture, for instance blue glass bottles similar to those which contain a popular local remedy.

There are also homages to the historic connection between the Seychelles and explorers through the use of cartography and calendars.

A moon calendar is presented to guests on arrival and ’moonrise’ rather than sundowner cocktails offered in the bar. Iconography from old maps together with coordinates are used to point guests toward special places on the island.

A programme of activities drawing on the Seychellois spirit has been devised by 01-20.

These include weekly community dinners to bring together the guests and staff; Creole cooking classes; traditional weaving demonstrations and opportunities for guests to make jewellery from foraged shells or to cook over an open fire fish which they have caught themselves.

Guests are also encouraged to explore beyond the resort and provided with picnics complete with local Takamara rum bottles or freshly cracked coconut water.
