Why Cunard picked a city to be Queen Anne's godparent

After keeping everyone guessing for months, Cunard sprang the most unexpected of surprises yesterday when it announced the godparent of its newest ship Queen Anne would be the City of Liverpool.

It is thought to be the first time a city has been honoured in this way, but with the naming taking place at Liverpool’s Pier Head in front of the famous Three Graces, which include Cunard’s former headquarters, it seemed highly appropriate.

Picked to represent the city were five notable Liverpudlian women: Spice Girl Melanie C, broadcaster and community leader Ngunan Adamu, restaurant entrepreneur Natalie Haywood, Liverpool musician Jayne Casey, and British Olympian heptathlon athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Their introduction drew cheers from the thousands of onlookers on the waterfront where a special stage had been set up for the ceremony, hosted by TV personalities Matt and Emma Willis.

Cunard president Katie McAlister stressed that having been the birthplace of Cunard, Liverpool was a natural choice as godparent.

“There is nowhere in the world where Cunard is more loved than Liverpool and today Queen Anne represents and strengthens both our past, but also our enduring bond,” she declared.

“It’s for that reason we asked the City of Liverpool to be the godparent of Queen Anne so please accept this as a dedication to each and every one of you in this city.”

This represents a major departure from recent Cunard godparents, who have been Royal family members.

Sovereign Cruise Club managing director Stefan Shillito described the choice of Liverpool as “inspired and modern”, reflecting Queen Anne’s contemporary nature.

“It is nice when a city has a link with a ship, especially Liverpool which has a fantastic shared heritage with Cunard,” he said.

“It will mean a lot to the people of Liverpool and every time Queen Anne visits, it will be special, like a homecoming.”
