Ambassador Cruise Line has axed all calls in Amsterdam for the remainder of the year following protests from climate activists over the past few months.
The UK no-fly cruise line has confirmed the change will affect only two sailings – the German and Dutch Festive Getaway onboard Ambience and the Wellbeing Getaway with Sporting Legends onboard Ambition.
The two cruises, due to depart respectively on 8 and 12 December, will instead berth in IJmuiden – around 24 miles north of Amsterdam.
“Between now and Christmas our port calls have been changed from Amsterdam to IJmuiden given the recent activity that has affected not only Ambassador but other cruise ships in the region,” said a spokesperson.
“As a precautionary measure we’ll go to IJmuiden instead of Amsterdam until the end of the year and then we’ll make a decision as to what we’re going to do for any Amsterdam calls next year and we’ll update [customers] as appropriate.”
Several cruise lines have diverted sailings away from Amsterdam after climate activists targeted the vessels with demonstrations and other acts of civil disobedience.
Just last month, an Ambassador ship carrying Advantage Travel Partnership conference delegates was diverted as a precaution against planned protests from Extinction Rebellion activists.
