The US’s chief medical officer, Dr Anthony Fauci, believes the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is likely to be accepted by the US when the country reopens to international visitors in November.
Currently, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which regulates vaccines in the country, does not recommend the AZ jab for use in the US.
However, Fauci told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Tuesday (21 September) that the country has a "substantial amount" of information on the vaccine.
"I don’t believe there’s any reason to believe that people who have received the AZ vaccine should feel there’s going to be a problem," he said..
"I can’t account for every vaccine that has been approved by the UK. I’m not sure about all of them, but the specific one about AZ, given that we have a substantial amount of information on it, again, without being definitive about it, I would predict that there would not be problem there."
Fauci said now the US is comparable with "so many other countries", including the UK, the government wants to have a uniform policy of requiring vaccinations and testing.
The final decision on whether or not the vaccine is approved for travel to the US when it reopens its borders to international travellers in November will be made by the CDC.
Fauci also detailed how exceptions on entering the country will be made for children and those medically exempt from having a Covid-19 vaccine.
