Bhutan has made another adjustment to its Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) charged to all visitors, as well as introducing a new online visa system.
The country now charges $100 a night SDF for adult visitors, with children aged 6-12 paying $50 and under-sixes free.
In September 2022, Bhutan caused disquiet among operators and visitors when it hiked the SDF from $65 a night to $200.
Last June, following lobbying, this was amended to allow visitors staying for four nights to stay another four without further charge. Those remaining in Bhutan for 12 nights were also able to stay for up to 30 nights without additional fees.
The latest change will better suit those staying in the tiny country – roughly the size of the UK Midlands – for a few days.
In addition, Bhutan requires visas for all visitors, now payable online and processed “within five working days” for a $40 fee.
