Birmingham airport has set a new record for January passenger numbers.
Last month the Midlands gateway handled 666,681 passengers - 55,000 more than the same month in 2015.
A 18% rise in long-haul flights was one of the main drivers of the improvement.
Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham airport, said: “This is an excellent start to the year and it means we are now celebrating our eleventh consecutive month of record breaking passenger figures.
“We expect the coming 12 months to be successful as we welcome more airlines to the flourishing Midlands region. This Easter alone will see us introduce Qatar, CSA, Iberia and Blue Air to Birmingham as well as the introduction by Emirates of its A380 aircraft.”
Scheduled traffic accounted for almost 90% of the total with charter passengers making up the remaining 10%.
Birmingham isn’t the only regional airport growing at a decent pace. and it will be interesting to see if this trend is sustainable.
