Eight Brits have been charged in connection with an alleged food poisoning scam in Majorca, reported to have cost businesses at least €200,000.
According to The Times, the group collected information from British tourists staying at all-inclusive resorts on the island between 2016 and 2017. This information was then passed to lawyers in the UK, who lodged fake compensation claims for sickness, from which the group took a cut.
All eight implicated in the alleged scam are accused of fraud, The Times reports, with the judge confirming compensation claimed via the scheme ran to in excess of €200,000 – but this figure could be higher with the full extent of losses incurred by hotels and tour operators yet to be determined.
The court reportedly heard how only 38 of the 800 eventual sickness claimants against a single Majorcan hotel had requested medical help during their stay.
Siblings Laura Joyce and Marc Grimstead, described – The Times reports – as the ringleaders by the judge, are among the eight Brits implicated. A trial date is yet to be fixed.
