Spain, Morocco, Denmark, Switzerland and Japan have introduced stringent travel restrictions on UK arrivals due to fears over the recently-discovered Omicron variant of Covid-19.
On Saturday (27 November), the UK was added to Switzerland’s red list, meaning those arriving must quarantine for 10 days, including those planning to transit to another country.
The Moroccan government announced the suspension of all flights to the country from 11.59pm Monday (29 November).
Travellers from the UK to Spain will have to show a vaccination certificate from 1 December. Children under the age of 12 are exempt when travelling with an adult.
The new legislation also applies to the Balearic and Canary islands.
The Spanish Tourism Office said the country "reinforces its position as a safe holiday destination" with almost 90% of its population aged 12 and over reportedly being vaccinated.
"Based on Spain’s Ministry of Health data from a seven-day period up until 26 November 2021, the accumulated incidence rate of Covid infection in Spain is 97.98 per 100,000 residents," they added.
According to Sky News, Japan will close to all foreign travellers from Tuesday (30 November).
The rule changes come after a new strain of Covid-19, dubbed the Omicron variant, was discovered in six southern African countries and declared a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organisation.
The European Commission further called for an "emergency break" on travel to southern Africa.
On Saturday (27 November), prime minister Boris Johnson announced that travellers arriving back in the UK must take a PCR test by the end of the second day.
