The cruise industry is on-track to meet its 2030 carbon reduction goals, according to director general of Clia Europe Marie-Caroline Laurent.
However, speaking during a panel session at the 2023 Clia Conference onboard P&O Cruises’ Arvia on Sunday (14 May), Laurent told delegates the transition to net zero by 2050 requires "even more effort".
"Our net-zero 2050 target seems far away, but this is happening now," she added. "But we are on track to hit our 2030 40% global reduction in emissions goal."
The acceleration towards the target has been bolstered, Laurent added, by governments adopting new rules to install shore power connectivity across additional European ports.
Laurent was joined on the panel by marine biologist Monty Halls and founder of Ocean Generation Jo Ruxton.
Halls applauded the sector for promoting more sustainable trips, but warned customers are not prepared to "be lectured" about environmental policies.
"You have to be subtle with your messaging and get it across that way," he added. "It will take time, it’s no one’s fault, but it just takes a while to bring people across, and you can’t be too aggressive."
Ruxton said the "easiest" environmental issue companies can rectify is the use of plastics onboard ships.
"You do not have to be a politician or a scientist to make change – anyone can," she advised agents. "The impact of everyone making a behaviour change will be far more important than an individual."
