An incoming cyclonic storm has prompted the UK Foreign Office to update its travel advice for Sri Lanka.
According to the country’s Department of Meteorology, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern provinces of the country from Wednesday (10 May).
Fairly heavy showers are also likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Travellers have been advised showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere over the island – particularly during the afternoon or night – and strong winds can be expected at times over western and southern coastal areas and along the western slopes of the central hills.
The public has been advised to take "adequate precautions" to minimise damages caused by strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
In an updated travel advisory, the FCDO said: "A depression in the south east Bay of Bay of Bengal will gradually develop into a cyclonic storm.
"Strong winds, showers and thundershowers are expected across Sri Lanka from 10 May 2023. The public are advised to take precautions."
