The boss of Visit Cornwall believes the UK’s domestic holiday boom is over now that international travel has resumed en masse after a two-year Covid-enforced hiatus.
Visit Cornwall chief executive Malcolm Bell told The Telegraph "staycation fatigue" had set in, with numbers down significantly this summer compared with the last two.
"We’re nowhere near last year’s numbers," he said. "Last year, we had more customers than we could cope with. Now we’re are back to having to try to attract visitors.
"There has been a bit of staycation fatigue after the past couple of years when people had no choice but to stay in Britain."
Bell said the cost of living crisis was also having an effect, with people weighing up whether they can afford a break or not – causing a spike in last-minute cancellations.
According to Lake District tourism board Cumbria Tourism, 55% of holiday businesses report bookings being down on an average year, The Telegraph further reports.
The paper said demand for breaks in Devon, Norfolk and Suffolk had also been hit.
