Transport secretary Grant Shapps is among a number of cabinet ministers poised to withdraw his support for prime minister Boris Johnson and urge him to resign, it is understood.
The BBC’s Chris Mason reported on Wednesday afternoon (6 July) Shapps was among a delegation that also includes Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis ready to tell the PM his time was up.
It follows a slew of high profile resignations triggered by those of chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid on Tuesday evening (5 July).
Two ministerial aides to the Department for Transport, Nicola Richards MP and Laura Trott MP, have also quit their posts as parliamentary private secretaries to the department.
Meanwhile, chair of parliament’s transport committee, Huw Merriman MP, has also withdrawn his support for Johnson and submitted a letter of no confidence in his leadership.
