Guests and staff at a luxury resort in Greece have escaped a fierce wildfire unhurt.
The fire started near the eastern Peloponnesian resort of Amanzoe on Monday (4 July) and spread to the grounds of the property.
According to local media reports, authorities are exploring possible causes of the fire – including arson.
Around 40 people were evacuated without injury, while the resort’s operator Aman confirmed to TTG on Tuesday (5 July) the damage was thankfully limited.
"We can confirm a wildfire started near Amanzoe yesterday (Monday 4 July) and reached the grounds of property," said an Aman spokesperson.
"All guests and staff were safely and swiftly moved to alternative accommodation. We are very grateful to the local authorities who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and who remain on site to continue to monitor the situation.
"This morning (Tuesday 5 July), we can confirm that the extent of the fire is not as bad as initially feared. We are relieved to report that all main areas of the hotel have been preserved, with exterior damage to just a limited number of pavilions, while all villas remain intact. Sections of the surrounding landscape have been impacted."
Operations at Amanzoe have been suspending pending further assessments. The spokesperson said Aman wanted to thank guests for their understanding. Those with imminent reservations are being contacted, with further updates to follow "in due course".
