Iceland’s famous geothermal spa, Blue Lagoon, has extended its latest decision to close owing to the ongoing spell of volcanic activity along the Reykjanes peninsula.
The spa has been shut, on and off, for the best part of three months now due to a series of eruptions in south-west Iceland, the latest coming last Thursday (8 February).
While this eruption has now ceased according to Iceland’s meteorological office, the spa late on Tuesday (13 February) said it would reassess the situation on Wednesday (14 February).
The nearby town of Grindavik has been evacuated several times in recent months, with lava flows cutting off road access. The latest eruption also impacted road access to the spa.
Iceland’s only international airport, Keflavik, is also situated on the peninsula but has been unaffected by the volcanic activity. Flights continue to operate to and from Iceland as usual.
The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for Iceland on Monday, noting the recent series of eruptions and the impact on Grindavik. "All roads to Grindavik and the surrounding area are closed and you should stay away from this area," said the FCDO.
However, it added: "Keflavik International airport and the road to it is unaffected and operating normally. The capital city, Reykjavik, and the rest of Iceland is not impacted by the eruptions. The likelihood of further eruptions in this location remains high."
