Intrepid Travel has launched an initiative to empower Indian women in the holy city of Varanasi to enter the male-dominated rickshaw touring trade.
Intrepid’s charity arm, the Intrepid Foundation, has invested £28,000 in the Holy City Rickshaw Programme, which will train women in Varanasi to drive e-rickshaws and help them build financial independence.
Ten female-led electric rickshaw tours will be incorporated into six of Intrepid’s Indian itineraries, including its 10-day North India Highlights and the 15-day Real Delhi to Kathmandu itineraries.
"The project aims to support greater female economic inclusion in India, where women still contribute only around 18% to the country’s overall GDP despite making up 48% of the population,” said Intrepid’s general manager for India, Rama Mahendru.
Mahendru added: "As we move towards our goal of increasing female participation in the tourism industry, we’re excited to continue showcasing the best of India and creating unforgettable memories for our guests."
The initiative is part of a collaboration with Indian charity Access Development, which provides economic and social development programmes to marginalised communities.
The rickshaw programme was launched in Jaipur in 2017 and saw more than 200 women from low-income families train to become rickshaw drivers, with many continuing to work today.
“We know investment in women has benefits that flow throughout the wider community and onto the next generation," said Intrepid Foundation general manager Biheng Zhang.
"As we look forward, I’m excited about what this initiative will bring to both the women involved and the travellers who will get to experience Varanasi through their eyes."
Earlier this year, Intrepid announced it would be placing women at the centre of its effort to launch tours in Saudi Arabia, which will be female-led and place a focus on female-owned and run businesses.
