An investigation is under way after a person was ingested into a passenger jet engine and killed at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.
The incident involving a KLM Embraer aircraft happened on Wednesday afternoon (29 May). Flight KL1341 was scheduled to fly to Billund in Denmark.
The deceased is yet to be identified, and it is unclear at this stage whether they were a passenger or a ground operative. KLM has confirmed an investigation is under way, as has the Netherlands’ military and border police.
"A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today [Wednesday] during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine," said KLM in a statement.
"Sadly, this person has died. The flight concerned was KL1341 bound for Billund. We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol. The circumstances are currently under investigation."
Images from the scene shared by Dutch national broadcaster NOS show the stationary aircraft near the airport terminal surrounded by emergency service vehicles.
Schiphol described the circumstances as a "horrible incident" in a translated post to X/Twitter. "Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we are caring for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this."
