Wendy Wu Tours has seen an increase in bookings to Japan after the country’s government announced plans to reopen its borders to international tourists next month.
In the last seven days, the specialist tour operator saw enquiries increase by around 170% compared to the previous week, with nearly 75% of that figure from agents as demand "surges" for autumn and spring cherry blossom tours in March and April 2023.
In response to the demand, the company has added more than 600 seats to its touring portfolio. The operator and its partners in Japan have been working with the Japanese government during the last 18 months to ensure its tours meet health and safety guidelines.
Glen Mintrim, chief executive at Wendy Wu Tours, said demand for Japan trips was at an "all-time high".
"Japan has taken a very positive move in relaxing its Covid requirements for UK travellers from 1 June, as well as increasing the daily number of international arrivals into the country from 10,000 to 20,000," he added.
