The Foreign Office has issued its second travel warning in as many months owing to ongoing volcanic activity in Indonesia.
Last month, the FCDO advised against all travel to within 5km of Mount Semeru in East Java – around 100km west of Bali – following an eruption.
A 3km exclusion zone has now been set up around Indonesia’s Mount Merapi after the volcano erupted on Saturday morning (7 January).
Merapi is around 300km west of Semeru on the island of Java, Indonesia’s most populous island owing to capital Jakarta sitting on its western flank near Sumatra.
"At 10am Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on 7 January, Mount Marapi in Sumatra erupted," said the FCDO. "The Indonesian authorities have imposed an exclusion zone of 3km at this time."
It is the third piece of active FCDO volcano advice for Indonesia at this time.
