Air fares are set to increase as carriers look to pass the cost of the pandemic onto their customers, predicts Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Spohr said the Covid-19 crisis will reset the cost of holidays and business trips abroad.
"I believe that prices were too low before Covid," he said. "€9 or £9 [a flight] from the UK to Portugal is not healthy for the industry, not healthy for our environment".
He also insisted that customers would be willing to pay more after not being able to travel for a large part of the past 18 months.
Spohr predicted the industry would see "more disciplined players" when it came to pricing, as a large number of operators took on debt during the pandemic.
"Lufthansa in the end probably has a $10bn bill of this whole Covid crisis," he continued. "That’s how much it has cost us. So similar numbers for our competitors. So we all will be forced to be more disciplined."
