Sunvil has come to the aid of guests affected by a wildfire in Corfu, and pledged its support for communities affected by the blaze.
A fire broke out on Sunday (23 July) in the hills of north-east Corfu affecting the communities of Porta, Mgoula, Sinies and Old Perithia. Authorities have enacted evacuation orders in the area, with evacuations ongoing too on the islands of Rhodes and Evia due to wildfires.
"Sadly, the fire spread and the local authorities quickly took the decision to evacuate the area, as well as a number of resorts along the coast – including those of Kalami, Barbati and Nissaki, featured by Sunvil and GIC The Villa Collection," said Sunvil managing director Chris Wright.
Wright said Sunvil’s representatives in Corfu had worked with local authorities to transfer all guests due to depart the island on Monday (24 July) to the airport, and source alternative accommodation for those due to stay for longer. "Our representatives remain in close contact with our guests and will continue to do so," said Wright.
Sunvil guests due to travel to affected areas of the island on Monday have been handed a letter at their departure airport and have already been sourced alternative accommodation. They are also free to transfer their holiday to a new destination or departure date, or take a full refund.
Sunvil has operated to Greece and its islands for the best part of 40 years, and Wright said both he and his team had been "deeply saddened" by the fires affecting Corfu and Rhodes.
"We have a long history with both destinations and call many islanders our friends and partners," said Wright. "Our thoughts are with all those touched by this sad situation and we give thanks to those working tirelessly to tackle the fires and to bring people to safety."
He also paid tribute to Sunvil’s team in Corfu. "On a personal note, I would like to express my gratitude and praise to Julia, Katie and our local team for the care and professionalism they have shown to our quests and others," said Wright.
Sunvil will continue to monitor the situation, and stressed its foremost priority was the safety of guests.
