The Travel Corporation (TTC) has announced its commitment to achieving net-zero status and has launched a review to ensure its targets align with climate specialists.
Using the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), established to help companies set climate targets, TTC’s direct and indirect emissions are being vetted to assess three different areas of the business.
Two metrics will examine TTC’s emissions from its own vehicles and properties, 13 Uniworld ships, 18 Red Carnation Hotels and five owned accommodations, as well as more than 30 offices and a winery.
A third measure will address TTC’s indirect emissions. The company developed an internal carbon calculator with an independent third party to manage trip emissions from included transportation, meals and accommodations.
TTC has also invested in projects around the world that support the reduction of carbon emissions, as part of its Climate Action Plan, launched last year.
In 2021, through its not-for-profit TreadRight Foundation, TTC helped fund two nature-based carbon removal solutions projects GreenWave and Project Vesta.
Both projects are currently being piloting.
TTC and TreadRight have also joined forces with Visit Scotland on a new project aiming to make Scotland the world’s first net-zero destination.
The project seeks to help create a blueprint for other destinations to follow.
Shannon Guihan, TTC’s chief sustainability officer, said: “On Earth Day, as a global travel provider operating in 70 countries, we are taking action towards our net zero commitment by setting our carbon reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative.
“Implementing science-based targets is an ambitious and critical step not only towards achieving net zero, but also towards a more resilient future for our planet, wildlife, the local communities we visit and for our sector as a whole."
