TTG teams past and present celebrated 70 years since the first edition of the Travel Trade Gazette – and 10 years since the beginning of TTG Media – at a special event in London on Wednesday evening (18 October).
Taking place at the Royal Geographic Society in Kensington, the event saw members of the TTG community from across travel come together to mark the milestones.
Editors including Stephen Roe (1973 to 1976), Mike Toynbee (1976 to 1978) and John Welsh (2003 to 2007) joined the modern-day team to raise a glass to the past, present and future of TTG.
Editorial director Pippa Jacks unveiled the TTG travel icons, who have been celebrated in the pages of TTG throughout the year, as individuals who have been integral to the growth and reputation of the industry – and of TTG itself - over the past 70 years.
Former vice-president EMEA Celebrity Cruises Jo Rzymowska, who was present at the event, was named the latest TTG icon, alongside John McEwan, former Thomas Cook UK managing director.
Paying tribute to TTG founders Leslie Stone and Ted Kirkham, TTG Media CEO and owner Daniel Pearce thanked those for attending, adding: “The Travel Trade Gazette was born very much as a result of the demands of its time... in the post-war years, when people started travelling for leisure in significant numbers for the very first time, and there was a pressing need for travel agents to connect with the growing number of travel suppliers.
“70 years on, TTG is still doing exactly the same job... it’s a living, breathing thing that continues to support and connect the travel industry in ways that couldn’t have been dreamt of in 1953!”
Since October 2013, the Travel Trade Gazette has been owned by TTG Media Limited.
