More flights have been cancelled as the Beast from the East continues its icy grip on the UK.
Edinburgh airport plans to close fully from 6pm today (March 1) with some airlines, including Lufthansa, Jet2, Qatar Airways, Brussels Airlines, Etihad and Loganair, still planning to operate flights before this closure.
British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet, Turkish, KLM, Flybe, Aer Lingus and Air France have already decided to cancel all flights from Edinburgh on March 1.
Glasgow airport said: “Following heavy snow showers overnight and with a red alert still in place we will be extending the closure of the airport until 3pm on Thursday.
“Further snow is forecast during the day which will make travel conditions to and from the airport extremely challenging”.
Ryanair, Jet2.com and easyJet are among the carriers to cancel all flights from Glasgow on March 1.
East Midlands Airport said its runway was closed to clear snow and was expected to open at 12.00. It added delays were expected and passengers should check with their airline. Ryanair has cancelled all flights from the airport, as well as Leeds Bradford airport, on March 1.
Gatwick airport tweeted to say “extreme weather conditions across the UK and Europe mean that many flights are cancelled or delayed today”. It urged passengers to check their flights with their airline and allow plenty of time for their journey to Gatwick.
Heathrow said it had worked with airlines to “consolidate the flight schedule to provide more certainty around departing flights”.
The Heathrow Express tweeted to say that London Paddington was closed due to the adverse weather conditions.
Elsewhere in the capital, London City airport said delays and cancellations were expected due to forecast snow, with passengers advised to check flight status. And Essex-based Stansted airport said "some flights may be disrupted".
Meanwhile in Scotland, which has been issued a red alert for snow, Edinburgh airport said it was closed until 10am because it did not have “the critical mass of staff needed to run operations securely”.
“We ask that passengers do not come to the airport unless their airline has confirmed that their flight is scheduled. The safety of our passengers and our staff are our priority, and we ask people to make safe decisions regarding their travel.”
Manchester airport is still open but tweeted to say: “Due to the continued bad weather we are seeing 30 cancellations so far today. We’ll update on these as soon as possible and provide a full list. In the meantime passengers can check our website and with their airline.”
Birmingham airport said it was “open and operational”, but added that airlines had cancelled some flights due to adverse weather in other parts of the UK and Europe.
Newcastle airport said it was “open and operational” following continuous snow showers but that some flights “had been affected”.
The UK is set to be hit by further blizzards today when Storm Emma arrives bringing biting winds and significant travel disruption to the south, west and central Europe, parts of Wales and Northern Ireland.
