VisitBritain has welcomed the appointment of Conservative MP Julia Lopez as the country’s new tourism minister.
MP for Hornchurch and Upminster, Lopez, a former culture minister, was appointed to the position – which has been vacant since Lord Syed Kamall’s brief stint under Liz Truss – last month.
"We are delighted to welcome Julia Lopez MP as the new minister for media, tourism and creative industries, appointed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)," VisitBritain said.
Andy Fenner, chief executive of the UK Short Term Accommodation Association (STAA), also welcomed the appointment, remarking on the "great deal of engagement" the group had enjoyed with Lopez’s predecessors.
"We’re pleased with the news Julia Lopez MP has been appointed as the new tourism minister," he added. "We are keen to continue a similar level of dialogue with Ms Lopez and her team about the sustainable and responsible growth of our industry."
