Hotelier Rob Barrett knighted for services to Antigua tourism industry
Hotelier Rob Barrett, founder of Elite Island Resorts, has been knighted in recognition of his monumental services to the Antiguan tourism industry and community. Sir Rob received Antigua and Barbuda’s top honour during the 42nd Anniversary of Independence National Awards Ceremony.
Sir Rob has been a cornerstone of the Antiguan hospitality sector for four decades and is at the helm of six hotels on the island, including Hammock Cove, St James’s Club, Pineapple Beach Club, Verandah Resort Antigua, Galley Bay and Jolly Beach Resort.
Sir Rob has dedicated his life to the Caribbean tourism industry, first beginning his hospitality career in the 1960s when he first worked as a beach boy. He steadily rose through the ranks to become night auditor then general manager, learning about the industry from the bottom up before founding Elite Island Resorts.
Beyond tourism, his philanthropic endeavours include Wishing Well, a charity founded by Sir Rob in 2012 to support varied community needs from medical assistance to youth education.
Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism, The Hon. Charles Fernandez commented on Sir Rob’s knighthood: “Your unwavering support and dedication have helped to transform and shape the Antigua and Barbuda tourism product. Your extensive experience and willingness to offer your expertise has not gone unnoticed. We recognise and applaud you for your sterling contribution.”
