Last week, during the UK’s Mental Health Awareness Week, Internova Travel Group hosted a special edition of its Women of Internova sessions, inviting leading British menopause specialist, Dr Naomi Potter, to share advice with employees.
Dr Potter is a British Menopause Society accredited specialist. She has nearly two decades of experience as an NHS doctor with a background in General Practice and Women’s Health, and is the founder of Menopause Care.
The session, hosted by Barrhead Travel’s Nicki Tempest-Mitchell on Wednesday 17th May, brought together around 250 colleagues from across the global Internova Travel Group network to share an overview of the menopause and discuss the impact it has both personal and professionally on individuals who experience it.
During the interview, Dr Potter talked through the most common symptoms of the menopause, emotions associated with the experience, addressed misconceptions, and provided practical advice for those on or approaching their menopause journey. She also discussed how others can support partners, colleagues, family or friends going through it.
Nicki Tempest-Mitchell, Women of Internova Champion and Sales & Marketing Director at Barrhead Travel, said:
“I’d been following Dr Potter via her Instagram page for some time and was really pleased to be able to invite her to our Women of Internova session in May, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week.
“The conversations surrounding menopause have been largely non-existent until recently – particularly in the workplace. It is fantastic to see the stigma now gradually being removed. Given that over half of our global population is going to experience the menopause, and an even higher proportion in the travel industry – it is important to move the topic to the top of our agendas to inform and empower colleagues.
“Responsible businesses know that education and open discussion surrounding health and wellness is non-negotiable when it comes to employee wellbeing. We cannot have productive businesses if we are tiptoeing around topics that have significant impacts on the lives of our people.
“Whether you personally experience menopause or not, it is a key part of life and understanding the symptoms, impact and how to manage it means we can be better equipped to experience it or support a colleague going through it.”
Internova Travel Group hosts its Women of Internova sessions monthly, open to all colleagues. Each month, a guest speaker from within or outside the industry joins the group to share their experiences, insights and reflections as a woman navigating their career.
