The office of Sri Lanka's president Ranil Wickremesinghe said it was hopeful the update would "ensure tourists have a clear understanding of Sri Lanka's current progress"

Around 130,000 British tourists visited Sri Lanka last year, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, making it the country's third largest source market. The president's office confirmed nearly 54,000 tourists from the UK had so far visited Sri Lanka in the three months to 27 March, raising hopes 2024 will be an even stronger year.

"This updated advisory is expected to further boost Sri Lanka’s tourism sector," the office added. Tourism minister Harin Fernando told Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror that the new advice could have a "multiplier effect" with other source markets looking to the UK for a steer on whether to update their travel advisories.

"Many countries are guided by the UK travel advisory and this update will have a positive, multiplier effect across all our generating markets," he added.
