Hotel giant IHG has partnered with the charity Just a Drop to fund safe water projects in Cambodia and Kenya.
The Water for All initiative will be piloted at five of the group’s voco hotels, two of which are in the UK – voco Reading and voco Oxford Thames.
IHG selected the voco brand for the partnership as they already provide complimentary filtered water in rooms as part of their sustainability mission.
Guests staying at some of the hotels will have be invited to donate to the project during food service, while at others, a portion of the proceeds made from filtered water sales will be donated.
A portion of the proceeds will help bring safe water and sanitation to the Cambodian village of Trapeang Svay, providing latrines and hygiene training to the local communities.
The remaining money will be invested in giving children at Kawala Primary School, Kenya, access to hand washing stations and a rainwater harvesting tank.
“This partnership presents an opportunity for both organisations, and their teams, to work together to create real positive impact from ‘Water for All’,” said Just a Drop founder Fiona Jeffery OBE.
“With a child dying every two minutes from dirty water, the impact that Water for All will have cannot be understated and we look forward to seeing the benefits of the programme very soon.”
IHG head of voco Julie Cheesman added: “Supporting communities and improving lives is integral to our voco brand ethos, and from our recent research we know that responsible travel is important to our guests.”
The project is part of IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow pledge to improve the lives of 30 million people by 2030, ensuring adequate hygiene conditions to communities around the world.
