Intrepid Travel has pledged more than £500,000 to support communities around the world this year through its non-profit Intrepid Foundation.
The adventure specialist on Thursday (18 January) revealed it will match up to £500,000 in public contributions to the foundation over the next 12 months.
Donations will go to one of the 45 charities with which the Intrepid Foundation works, including Morocco’s High Atlas Foundation and Education for All.
In addition to the operator’s £500,000 donation, the Intrepid Foundation will aim to raise an additional £1 million through travellers’ contributions.
“By introducing customers to these local initiatives during their Intrepid trips, we hope to bridge an important gap and do more for the communities that have become like family through our travels,” said the foundation’s general manager Biheng Zhang.
Intrepid has raised more than £1.4 million for charitable causes over the past year, which has been used to provide support to communities impacted by tragedies such as the 6.8-magnitude earthquake which struck Morocco last September.
“The needs of communities like those of the High Atlas Mountains are the reasons why this foundation exists,” said Intrepid managing director EMEA Zina Bencheikh, who is Moroccan and was in the country when the quake hit.
“By introducing this new matching initiative, we aim to assure our travellers that any amount they’re able to give will go a long way.”
Intrepid was named among Time Magazine’s “most influential companies” last June, with Time citing the brand’s charitable and environmental efforts.
