Four people have died and more than 15 others have been injured – some very seriously – after a building collapsed on the seafront in Palma de Majorca on Thursday evening (23 May).
Sky News, citing reports in the Spanish media, said the building concerned is a restaurant, which has been named by local media in Palma as the Medusa Beach Club.
The incident happened at around 8.30pm local time (7.30pm BST) in Carrer de Cartago (Cartago Street). The BBC reports several people were believed still to be trapped in the building following the collapse.
Balearic emergency services confirmed shortly before midnight local time (11pm BST) four people had been killed and 16 injured, nine very seriously and seven seriously. The injured have all now been taken to hospital.
Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sanchez said in a post to X (formerly Twitter) he had spoken to Balearics president Marga Prohens and Palma mayor Jaime Martinez about the incident and was following the situation closely.
Sanchez said Spain’s government stood ready to support the response to the incident with all necessary means and personnel. "I want to send my condolences to the families of the deceased and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured," he added.
Prohens thanked Palma’s emergency services for their response and ongoing work at the scene, and said she was sending her wishes to the families of the four people killed.
Palma is Majorca’s capital and largest settlement with around 400,000 inhabitants. It is unclear at this stage whether those who died or suffered injuries in the incident were residents or tourists.
