Ex-Downing Street communications chief Alastair Campbell has savaged the government’s treatment of the travel sector during the Covid pandemic.
Speaking to TTG, Campbell said he believed travel businesses had been dealt “lots of false promises, mixed messaging and chaos” while desperately trying to survive.
He branded the government’s quarantine approach “a mess” and called its lack of effective action on airport testing “unforgivable”.
“Your industry [travel] has been crying out for some kind of plan and leadership – it’s the responsibility of government to step up to that,” he said.
A prominent mental health campaigner, Campbell was interviewed during TTG’s latest Get Travel Talking seminar on Wednesday (28 October).
Discussing his own battle with depression and the impact he believed Covid would have on the UK’s mental health support services, Campbell said government should better serve travel considering “it’s such a fundamental part of people feeling better”.
Also taking part in the seminar were travel chiefs Lisa McAuley, Tony Roberts and Brian Young who discussed the personal and professional impacts of leading their teams through the Covid crisis.
The findings of TTG’s recent industry mental health survey were also presented and analysed in a session with Abta LifeLine director Trudie Clements and Harp Wallen managing director Kristina Wallen.
