Baggage handler and security staff strikes to disrupt Italy travel next week
Ilaria Grasso MacolaThousands of travellers are set to be disrupted early next week as ground staff at major Italian airports will walk out over pay and working conditions.
Baggage handlers at Milan’s two main airports – Malpensa and Linate – will down tools on Monday (8 January) whereas security staff will strike at the likes of Venice and Rome Fiumicino airports, potentially delaying traffic throughout the country’s whole network.
Malpensa and Linate have called on passengers to check before travelling to and from the airports, while flag carrier Ita Airways was forced to axe 20 national flights on Monday.
“The company was forced to cancel 20 national flights on Monday while managing to guarantee all international flights,” the carrier said in a statement.
“In the event of cancellation, passengers will be able to change their flight at no extra cost or get a refund by 12 January.”
