Byway Travel has introduced carbon labelling across its trips off the back of research suggesting more than four in 10 Brits are actively exploring flight-free holiday options.
The slow travel specialist said the new feature would empower travellers to weigh up carbon costs as readily as they do monetary ones when it comes to making holiday choices.
Research by OnePoll for Byway reveals 42% of Brits are looking at alternatives to flying to reduce their carbon footprints, with this figure rising to 61% for Gen Z travellers and 65% for Londoners.
“Our at-a-glance flight-comparison feature shows the scale of the carbon savings made by choosing flight-free for specific trips," said Byway founder and chief executive, Cat Jones.
"We hope it will inspire more people to swap flight-based holidays for joyful multi-stop overland journeys."
Labelling is available across Byway’s overland travel options, including rail, bus and ferry. Byway claims potential reductions of 80%+ on several of its flight-free trips versus flight-inclusive ones, including a weekend in Scotland, a week in Spain and a fortnight in Croatia.
Byway is not the only tour operator to have recently adopted carbon labelling; in late September, Intrepid Travel placed carbon labels on more than 500 of its itineraries, including its top 100 trips.
Meanwhile, Explore Worldwide – which introduced carbon labelling in April 2022 – has called for it to become an industry standard, stating last month it would ensure consistency and make it easier for consumers to carry out comparisons.
