Canary Islands removed from travel corridor list
James ChappleThe Canary Islands have been removed from the government’s quarantine-free travel corridor list.
The latest changes to the list were announced by transport secretary Grant Shapps in a string of tweets posted shortly after 5pm on Thursday (10 December).
Those arriving in England from the Canaries as of 4am on Saturday (12 December) will need to self-isolate for two weeks.
It comes just six weeks after the Canaries was added to the list on Sunday 25 October.
Botswana and Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, have been added to the list.
Shapps tweeted: "Data indicates weekly cases and positive tests are increasing in the Canary Islands and so we are removing them from the travel corridor list to reduce the risk of importing Covid-19.
"From 4am Saturday 12 December, if you arrive from these islands you will need to self-isolate.
"Botswana and Saudi Arabia have been added to the travel corridor list. If you arrive from these places after 4am Saturday 12 December you do not need to self-isolate."
Reacting to the news, Advantage Travel Partnership chief executive Julia Lo Bue-Said said: "And this is why the travel industry cannot recover from the illogical travel corridor measures and why travel agents are among the worst hit businesses as demonstrated by the ONS data released today.
"No recovery, -90%, and no recognition that government have simply failed so many."
Rory Boland, Which? Travel editor, added: "There is a lot to debate in the approach the government has taken to travel corridors, but one thing is certain – removing the Canary Islands this close to the winter sun season is going to send some holiday companies bankrupt."
