More families are choosing Colombia as it grows as a top destination for international tourists, recently reaching historic numbers. In 2023 Colombia welcomed more than 6.1 million international travellers — a 29.9% increase on 2022 — and this growth has continued into 2024. Whether enjoying big cities like Bogota or Medellin, tropical beaches, or adventurous hikes, the country offers experiences for children of all ages; and with careful planning it can be a stress-free and enriching experience. Plus, thanks to a daily and direct flight from Heathrow to Bogota, the UK travel trade has all the ingredients it needs for a good family destination option.
With so many diverse destinations across Colombia’s six tourist regions, there’s something for everyone.
In the Greater Colombian Caribbean families can relax on beautiful beaches or opt for nature adventures like hiking through incredible landscapes. This region offers a wide range of family-friendly activities, from peaceful beach days to more adventurous experiences such as trekking in national parks. For those interested in marine life, there are also opportunities for diving or snorkelling, especially in San Andres, where coral reefs and vibrant sea creatures make for memorable experiences.
In cities like Medellin, families will find plenty of child-friendly attractions, from the interactive Parque Explora science museum to the Botanical Garden.
“It’s important to balance busy days of exploration with moments of relaxation, allowing some family members to rest while others venture out,” suggests a Procolombia spokesperson.
A visit to the nearby town of Guatape is a must, where children can climb the famous Piedra del Penol rock, or enjoy a boat ride on the colourful reservoir.
“Transportation choices, whether by road or Medellin’s iconic metro cable, can also be part of the adventure,” adds the spokesperson.
Colombia’s Coffee Cultural Landscape inspired the Disney movie Encanto, which tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia. The Madrigals’ village is loosely based around towns in the Coffee Region, such as Salento, with wax palms featured at several points in the film.
The region offers immersive outdoor experiences and children can learn about coffee farming, agriculture, and interact with farm animals. These destinations blend fun with education.
For adventure-seekers, places like San Gil and the Chicamocha Canyon in Santander offer outdoor sports and gentler activities such as cable car rides and nature trails for younger travellers.
“By planning activities that appeal to everyone, incorporating outdoor adventures, and leaving room for flexibility, a family trip to Colombia can be truly unforgettable,” concludes Procolombia’s spokesperson.
There's no mistaking you're in South America from the moment you arrive in Colombia.
Pulsating cumbia beats and salsa music can be heard all over the country, and of course, this is the birthplace of (pop star) Shakira.
But beyond Colombia's distinct music scene, families will discover a variety of awe-inspiring landscapes.
Here, the Andes meet the Amazon, offering visitors the opportunity to have wild jungle adventures, breathtaking mountain hikes, and adrenaline-filled bike tours.
For me, a must-see is the Llanos, a vast wetland area teeming with wildlife including capybaras, anteaters and anacondas.
Combine fascinating city stays in Bogota, Medellin, and Cartagena that, through immersive experiences, will impress with exceptional cuisine, first-class museums, and incredible street art with stays in historic towns such as Salento, Villa de Leyva, and Mompox – all oozing with colonial charm.
For the cherry on the cake, finish on a Robinson Crusoe-style island, offering spectacular snorkelling.
