Cyprus was rocked by a powerful earthquake during the early hours of Tuesday morning (11 January).
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) confirmed it recorded a magnitude 6.4 quake. The impact was felt off the country’s west coast.
Striking at around 1am, the earthquake was measured at a depth of 2km and was centred around 30 miles west of the town of Polis.
There have been no immediate reports of injuries, casualties or significant damage said the Associated Press, citing comments made by police to Cyprus’s state broadcaster CyBC.
The tremor was reportedly felt across the island and in the region, with reports of tremors from Turkey, Israel and Lebanon, including from Turkey’s popular Antalya region.
It’s the fourth time the area has been hit by a major earthquake in as many months after Crete was rocked by a 5.8 magnitude tremor in September, which reportedly killed one person.
The island was then hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake a few weeks later before it was struck again in October.
